It's very common to see girls hanging out together and looking so closely. Sometimes, you will even doubt that if they're lesbians? In Singapore, when you go walking, no matter where you go, seeing boy-boy or girl-girl thing is not strange.
I have a girl classmate and she has a girlfriend. Her girlfriend dressed like a boy and looks like a boy(she's a handsome girl by the way :P ). They always stay together, even after class, her girlfriend will go and pick up her almost everyday. They call each other "Dear". In an English speaking country, it isn't a big deal ?!
"I don't know, I just feel good to stay with her..feel safe..." she explained to many of us.... "I think I'm straight.... there's nothing wrong with us. We're just good friends..."
Also, boys who dress like a girl, do make up and stay with girls and even behave like a girl are a common scene here.
Now, I'm very familiar with this kind of culture and society. However, if they live in China, maybe things are different.
Anyway, Singapore is a very small country, however, people here are very open-minded, especially the young.

In China, people call this "Fei Zhu Liu" aka 非主流 ;)
but still..I think they behave better than Feizhuliu...look normal...
Oh, I don't think Feizhuliu did anything wrong. They're just at their special time.
You just need to say how Chinese people living in mainland is not as open-minded as those living in any places other than mainland.
I don't know if I would call these young people "open-minded". What I do know is that in the UK if two people of the same sex ask for a twin room in a hotel they will probably be frowned upon, as if they are suspected homosexuals; while it is so natural for the Chinese to do so. It is still quite the people of the same sex hang out together mindset (男女授受不亲?) in mainland China, although it is clearly changing with the young generation, and I would call this change "open-mindedness".
Perhaps people in Singapore has already passed this stage and are looking into a more intimate same-sex relationship that can be more closely associated with homosexuality?
I think UK people have enough money to get a room for each person, and two people living in one room might cause privacy concern. But Chinese people care nothing about privacy, and revealing privacy doesn't lead to intimacy.
Hi!! :)
I just happened to look over your blog and I have to say that I didn't know things were like this in Singapore. Of course, I have never been there, so I can't jump to conclusions. But, I'm not too surprised by the way that girls and boys act. I mean cultures are different and I think it's fair to accept all of them the way they are. I totally respect all of those people and don't think that it is too weird or anything. Right now, I live in South Korea, but I've lived in the U.S.A. and Canada for most of my life. I think that I'm going to subscribe to your blog! :D I'll be looking forward to your future posts!
I don't think people in China would think it is strange for girls to stay intimate in the way described in your post. But your following statement makes feel so lucky & fortunate that I am in China, not in Singapore.

Gay and lesbian are accepted, no problem. But, why are there so many girly boys? dress like a girl? do make-up? behave like a girl....shit! That's not about being open-minded, it's about weirdness!
Someday, they both will know.... And it's kinda out of our concerns...and it's also a waste of time to guess if they are straight or not..I mean, this kind of behavior itself is nothing but gossip and boring.
Sometimes what we see is not what it is as we view it from our own experience, knowlege and by our own culture. Wht it looks similar (behavior ) is not the same casue in different culture.
