Today, I'd really like to introduce a very funny festival in China – The Single's Day(aka 光棍节). It's Nov 11, the famous Single's Day in China - a festival for single person 'invented' by some Chinese college students. (They picked up Nov 11 since 11-11 have so much 'single's)
The first time I knew this was in 2002. My freshman year in HUST. I do remember that night, after lights out, guys in our apartment started to shout and throw stuff outside the window to celebrate (in fact they are just having too much hormone #lol). Luckily our apartment was just next to a girl's apartment and they even shouted back. Then some of the guys got extremely excited and as you may guess – they almost threw all the stuff in their room then could throw, including a CRT monitor!! Hoho…no one had a good sleep that night…
Why Chinese people are so creative on this? I think, in western countries, people fall in love and even have sex at a much younger age than us. In China, due to our restricted traditional culture and college-entering pressure(actually very stupid and time-wasting education program), it's really hard to think about love in high school. So when the boys and girls enter a brand new pressure-free place, they would really find some way to change their poor life.
Frankly I'm really too old and too 'sweet' to celebrate, but Single's Day is really a good festival created by Chinese college students, so let's bless the singles :)
Yeah, I thought that was pretty funny - this is my first year knowing about this silly tradition. My cantonese friend sent me a text telling me its singles day tomorrow and I jested by asking her if I'll get an apple tomorrow (Valentine's day tradition for apples/oranges if i'm not mistaken), and she told me she'd give me a stick to play with hahahaha...
>_<;
It won't be a bad idea if there's more entertaining activities for this day, just like bachelor parties for weddings.
What a good idea for a day, despite being in the UK I will celebrate. It'd be great to create a tradition for it, with food and special rituals.
Also even as a native English speaker I'm not entirely sure should it not be Happy Singles Day with no apostrophe as Single is not a person like St. Valentine and it's a day for all the single people/ singles.
A single is defined as a noun meaning a person that is unmarried, so the author is correct.
And forget the food and drinks. Let's celebrate with some sex!
You're never too old to celebrate singles day! I celebrated by watching some NBA games and drinking a beer on my own...oh...我好可怜。。。
Haha, you must be kidding :)
I didn't knew about this festival, but fortunately on 11th, I sat on a lonely bench along the riverside and enjoyed the beer, watched the moon and stars in a hope that my beloved is also watching the same....
(though married but single in China...haha :)
(Everybody should celebrate it lonely...No parties, thats the essence of this festival)
Singles Day - I love it - It is my birthday on this day too - So every year I am enjoying being single! Aw Guo, you are never too old to celebrate!
Singles Day sounds like fun!!!
We married people should remember those happy days when single...
however, life is better if you can have a good one accompanying you to go ahead. So, try to find that good one who knows you and matches you!
All right. I am data with a girl that date(Actually, it is also my birthday (: ). Then, I got a cold the next day.... FT..
I was going to write a similar blog concerning this topic, you beat me to it. You did a nice job! Thanks and well add your rss to come categories on our blogs.Thank you so much, Jon B.college singles
I knew about this event this year (my first year in China). I find it quite fair to have a singles' day, since you get a lovers' day. =P
