Incoming, Take Cover!

Walking down the street on Chinese New Year's Eve in Beijing, you can see a lot of people playing with firecrackers and fireworks. Since I have no idea how explosive a firecracker could be, I feel really horrified, terrified, and petrified, if a firecracker has been lit before me. Don't blame me. Guangzhou has a history of banning firecrackers. It had banned firecrackers before I was old enough to play, so I really don't know whether a firecracker is safe to approach or not, if you just light it and put in on the ground.

On the New Year's Eve, I went to KFC with my roommate, who is also a born Cantonese. We were walking on the sidewalk, when a bunch of firecrackers started to explode before us. We just jumped off the sidewalk and walked into the traffic. Although that was an exit of some sort of express way, which doesn't has a tollbooth slowing down the traffic, we did consider a fast lane is even safer than a sidewalk with explosives. Firecrackers were designed to scare devils away, and now I'm convinced that it's effective, if devils' world also has such a restriction to explosives like Guangzhou.

  1. Well, I was in Agile at New Year's Eve. It's a living community in Panyu, Guangzhou.
I can't help to be more delightful when I heart those booming! Memories of childhood flashed back, it is nothing but traditional.
After the year in Germany, I know how much I love my country. When you'll never hear those explosives, you are kind of rootless.

  2. I've been to Panyu in the summer of 2004, it's really a great place. I was living in an apartment by the river.
However, different people enjoy different ways of celebration, the majority prefers the fireworks while people like me do not enjoy it that much.
