I unlocked my iPhone two months ago. You can read my post here. That wasted one of my New Year’s night. Now I’ve pwned it, so it would be easier to modify my iPhone in the future.

But wait… What does the word “pwn” mean? As wikipedia says:

The word “pwn” may have arisen and spread as a common typo of the word “own,” since the ‘p’ and ‘o’ keys are adjacent on a standard English keyboard. Alternatively, the word pwnage may have been created as a portmanteau of the words “pure” and “ownage,” “perfect” and “ownage,” or “powerful” and “ownage.” Similarly, “pwn” may have derived from “powerfully owned,” such as “you just got powerfully owned!” (shortened to “you just got pwned!”).

After I pwned my iPhone, it’s totally under my control. I can change my bootloaded, baseband, and firmware without any digital signature check. For example, before I pwn it, I have to use the official firmware package to restore my firmware and then crack it by software running on it. Now I can build my own firmware package on my Mac, and then use iTunes to restore it to my iPhone. As the digital signature check has been disabled, my iPhone will accept this modified firmware package, and restore the firmware with all the cracked features built-in.

After doing this, I started to think about one question: When shall we get our Internet pwned. You know, we don’t own it now, and it’s not under our total control. It’s just a technical problem, if it can be overcomed by pure technical approach.

Do we really need such complex functions on a cell phone?

For me, after I arrived in Canada, I only use the cell phone to make some call, even seldom use the text message. So … I am not quite sure …

Try using Google Maps in the U.S. And you’ll see…

You can identify your current location, and search for a route between you and the target. Google knows the traffic, so it can tell you how much time do you need to spend for this journey. Isn’t that amazing?

But Internet in China is not about information consuming, so that’s another story.

I use “own” or “pwn” to mean “destroy/defeat.” If I “pwned” you, I destroyed/defeated you. The wikipedia entry makes, sense too, but it is important to understand the context of “totally controlling” someone. For example, if you consistently kill (destroy/defeat/beat) someone in Counter-Strike or Halo or Starcraft, the meaning of “total control” is more like “I can defeat you so easily/completely, it is as if I can control you what you think and do.” Therefore, “own” is similar to “owning” someone, as a master would own a slave. The master controls the slave, just like a better player in a game can dictate (control) when the other player lives or dies.

When you talk abou “pwning” your iPhone, it sounds a bit awkward, mainly because the context is somewhat inappropriate and different to when “own/pwn” is usually used (in competitive situations). It sounds a bit silly to say you were competing against your iPhone and you “owned” it.

As for “pwning” your internet…well, if you’re referring to Chinese government censorship, CNReviews has a few posts to help you “pwn” those censors here and here.

Nice! You should take pictures of the pwn’ed iphone and what kind of applications you’re most excited about having on the iphone. It appears you are a real h4xx0r. ;)

Well…I’d rather own an N95, since iPhone’s appearance just doesn’t fit my taste:-)

First off I agree with Kai, it sounds a little weird pwning your iphone. Even though I know what pwned means, I just think its stupid thats all. If you mean owned, why not just type “owned” So what if some idiot misspelled the word 8 years ago, and everyone else decided to copy him.

Why we decide to further the use of the word is beyond me.

Nice work on owning your iphone.
