I don't know if direct election is as important in stamping out corruption as an "independent judiciary." In the Western model (which I am not suggesting be copied exactly for China) the judges are appointed by the elected representatives and then have protected office. They do not make the laws (the elected representatives do) but are supposed to judge whether or not the laws are being followed, including by the elected representatives and appointed officials. There are plenty of career positions and appointed positions in Western governments.

As long as judges have well-paid, protected positions, and all other branches of government (both military and civilian) see themselves as under the law, then judges can play a role in stamping out corruption by all government officials.

I feel that the ideas of "rule of law" vs. "rule of officials" and the idea of an independent judiciary is more important than direct elections...there are plenty of countries with democracy that also have lots of corruption.

Also it should be said, that freedom of the press is another way in which corruption is identified and rooted out.

Again, these models may not be appropriate to copy to China exactly, but may have some learnings for how a Chinese solution to corruption can work out.

I agree with you...

Even in the material for saving the victims, there is some kind of black-hearted cotton quilt. See the witness by this link:

Among all the ways towards democracy, one way called Directly Election is the key...

I don't mean we can do it domestically at present due to some popular reasons you know well, but at least you can find this link and watch the video here:

http://www.bullog.cn/blogs/immusoul/archives/131870.aspx

Some 8 or 9 years pupils are voting for their monitor using directly election. So much fun to watch it the vivid whole course! And you can also get back your confidence by this and hold on your hope to your children or even grandchildren who would do this for some certain levels of government on someday. I bet!

So far in China, efficiency still means massive human power but not scientific method.

This terrible quake does lead people to deep thinking, especially those social issues like projects built with skimped materials. At the same thime, what our central government behaves in this incident is clearly efficiency-oriented, which has aroused global attention.

1.Maybe children are the chosen ones who now are living in the Heaven, and meanwhile we just have been Left Behind because we still have to redeem ourselves.

2.Corruption evolved, not disappeared, after the disaster.
