The daft thing is that people can still get to them if they're determined enough and don't mind the connection breaking again and again and again. It doesn't even stop anything. It's just like you're trying to walk down the street and people stick their legs out to trip you over. They don't stop you getting where you're going, just make you very angry while you try.

One of my more amusing FB stories is of a Chinese girl in the UK who, when I said on FB that I was angry about Picasa being blocked, did the whole 'patriotic' thing in response. If you don't like it leave... it's the way my government does things... etc. etc. She was using FB extensively for photos and stories to keep up contact with friends from home, so when that went down for all her Chinese friends she too lost all that work. Her patriotic defence of your government didn't last for long after that.

I don't know what the Chinese government thinks it is stopping with all this nonsense, but it's certainly making itself a lot of enemies along the way. Is that REALLY what they want? For a lot of young people I know here, amongst their greatest reasons for being angry with the government is the blocking. It's not a very intelligent way of creating a harmonious society...
